Eight Designer Tips to Get You Motivated

Posted 4 years ago by Yung Tsai No Comments

If you’re a designer you’ll probably hit a wall every now and then. Sometimes it may be because there’s a change of deadline, a change of direction or some disagreements over a design decision with a boss, this can cause apathy on what you’re working and sometimes coffee just isn’t enough to get refueled, because what you really need is a spark to get moving.

Tip 1: Get up and move around

This is my number one tip of all, start here, it usually works just by doing this. Let’s face it, we sit on our butts a lot and all we need is to get some blood circulation going to get them gears from being rusty. Go outside (if you can) and walk around, throw a ball around, do some pushups. Staying active in general really helps.

Tip 2: Get inspired

Ever hear of Dribbble? If you’re a designer you should. Look at some popular or trending works to get gears running. It may not be the work or style you’re looking for but it should get you to stop running on fumes and get your refueled and charged.

Tip 3: Break big goals into smaller goals

break a project apart and work in steps rather than trying to climb a hill. Breaking into steps will help you plan better and look at the big picture.

Tip 4: Reward yourself

When you’re done with one step, reward yourself, walk around, chat with some coworkers, watch something you like, but time yourself, you don’t want to lose track of time here.

Tip 5: The 50/10 Rule

Work for 50 minutes on an important task then take a 10 minute break in between. This is a good rule in order to be productive. Don’t just work until you feel like taking a break, you don’t want to just finish a half-marathon, you want to try to finish a full marathon.

Tip 6: Don’t over-analyze things

Nothing’s perfect, the more you try to perfect anything, you lose motivation fast and it takes longer to achieve results and meet deadlines. This doesn’t mean the small things don’t matter, just look at the overall goal and think realistically what you can accomplish, there will be other projects and work you can show off.

Tip 7: Talk it out

If you’re hitting a wall, a friend can help, if you have other designers around, having a fresh set of eyes can help you see things you may have missed. If you don’t have any friends try someone that is willing to listen, sometimes just talking it out will help you figure out what the problem is. If you don’t have any friends, come talk to me – @yungtsai. If you don’t want to talk to me, then talk to yourself, out loud. But remember this tip from Neil Gaiman – “when people tell you something’s wrong or doesn’t work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.”

Tip 8: Laugh it out and have fun

Sometimes you just need to laugh to relax yourself. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, and endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and relieves pain.

These 8 tips should help you get the gears rolling, if you have any personal tips feel free to share it with us. Good luck!
